UIS Analytical Services was incorporated in 2000, with the intent to provide specialist analysis and consulting services for environmental, water, soil, rock, materials and agricultural samples. Soon after its establishment UIS Analytical Services was approached by Kumba Resources Limited to make an offer to purchase all the assets of their Environmental Technology Laboratory (ETL) and to provide Kumba Resources Limited with the same analytical services on an outsourced basis. This collaboration started in 2003, with UIS Analytical Services taking over 18 of the ETL staff.
The company has grown over the years, expanding its services, scope, staff, shareholding and geographic footprint.
In 2006 UIS Analytical Services made a strategic decision to expand its services to Tete, Mozambique, to support the explosion of exploration projects with the analysis of soil and drill core samples. ACT-UIS Laboratorios de Mocambique, Lda, a private Mozambican company with partners UIS Analytical Services (Pty) Ltd, Advanced Coal Technology (Pty) Ltd and PlurInvest Lda (all parties holding 33.33% shares) was formed. UIS Analytical Services sold its stake in ACT-UIS in 2012 to Bureau Veritas International SAS, who already had a stake in ACT-UIS through their acquisition of Advanced Coal Technology and was actively expanding their footprint in Africa.
The growing environmental division of UIS Analytical Services, which specialised in the analysis of organic compounds, was split off in 2006 to form a new company, UIS Organic Laboratory (Pty) Ltd. The new company focussed on serving the organic analysis market, while UIS Analytical Services kept its focus on inorganic-type and geological analysis. There remains a close cooperation between the companies, as UIS Analytical Services has a 42% share in UIS Organic Laboratory.
With the increase in mining activities in the Northern Cape, especially in the iron and manganese ore sectors, UIS Analytical Services expanded its local footprint and a branch was opened in Kimberley in 2011. The branch initially only focussed on XRF analysis, but services has since expanded to also include water analysis as well as some ore analysis by wet chemistry methods.
UIS Analytical Services is a private company with private shareholding. The initial shareholders were LabInvest (Pty) Ltd and UIS Beteiligungs- and Beratungs Gesellschaft mbH. In 2003 the initial two shareholding companies sold all their shares to individual shareholders as part of a drive to provide shareholding to Historically Disadvantaged Individuals. UIS Analytical Services currently has 8 private shareholders, all of them South Africans and of which 25.2% is black.
